WAVES (2022)
Waves is a sweet and sardonic two-minute short about old friends Sam and Ethel, who reconnect over a drinking game at their local beach.
The film was made as part of my application for the Australian Directors' Guild CreditMaker initiative and had its World Premiere at Flickerfest in 2023.
Waves has since received multiple awards in Australia and internationally, including Best 2-Minute Film at the Canberra Short Film Festival, Best Female Director at the Brussels World Film Festival, and Best Director, Best Super Short and Best Acting Duo in a Super Short at the Cannes World Film Festival.
With just two weeks of pre-production, the film was shot in under three hours at Tamarama Beach in Sydney. A torrential storm had cleared the beach on the public holiday marking Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, giving us an unexpectedly empty stretch of one of Sydney's busiest beaches.
Sam | Susie Porter
Ethel | Bishanyia Vincent
Director / Producer | Katharina Keil
Writer | Giles Gartrell-Mills
Cinematographer | Jonathan Baker
Editor | Aaron J March
Sound Design | Greg Crittenden, Take2
